The Harry Potter Books have been a huge hit since they first debuted back in June of 1997. People would anxiously await the next in the series of seven and many would line up at bookstores the day before a release to ensure they would get a copy. Although it has never been estimated how many days of school and work were missed after a new release, the number would like astound many. Once you pick up one of the Harry Potter Books, you won't want to put it down until you have read cover to cover. Why are they so popular?
The Harry Potter Books are typically classified under fantasy although many would consider them more about the coming of age of a young man. With elements of adventure, mystery, romance and thrills, there is something to draw everyone in. Each book starts by laying out a series of problems which Harry encounters and then the book moves though how he deals with them. Each story has Harry attending Hogwarts, a school, but the books all conclude over the summer term. Lessons about life are learned in each volume.
Many themes can be found also throughout the Harry Potter Books. Although death is the central theme throughout the seven novels, Harry will also explore oppression and learn how to beat the odds even when they seem overwhelming. Political subtexts may be found throughout the books according to some journalists and academics, but the author J.K. Rowling feels the most important thing to take from these books is the need to not take everything at face value. Don't hesitate to question authority, including the press and the establishment.
Everyone can find something to love in the Harry Potter Books. Even if you are not a fan of fantasy, you will find that the books are riveting and teach a great deal about life. Many have criticized the series saying that it is too dark and explores topics better left untouched. The best way to come to your own conclusion is to read them yourself. By doing so, you can make your own judgement and do exactly what J. K. Rowling is trying to teach you to. Don't take them at face value until you know what you are talking about.
